Up to 500 French Schools Close as Student Protests Escalate

France is bracing for widespread school closures on Monday as student-led protests continue to disrupt the education system. Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced that between 400 and 500 high schools across the country are expected to suspend lessons, either fully or partially, citing unfulfilled security conditions.

The unrest, which has shaken the nation since it began at a Paris school on September 17, stems from student grievances regarding chronic teacher absences, excessively long school days, and deteriorating infrastructure. The movement expanded into a nationwide demonstration last week.

Minister Geffray highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that 24 schools have been burned or ransacked since the protests began. The closures reflect the government’s assessment that it cannot guarantee safety for students and staff in the affected areas.

  1. I hope they resolve this peacefully. Burning schools helps no one, but the students’ frustration is completely valid given the current conditions.

  2. Teacher shortages are the real issue here. The protests started over safety, but this is really about chronic underfunding in our education system.

  3. 500 schools?! That’s a massive disruption. How are parents supposed to manage work when the government can’t secure classrooms?

  4. Another day of no classes. Honestly, after the third burnout, I’m just glad I don’t have to go anyway.
