The proliferation of AI-generated child sexual abuse material online has reached alarming levels, with the number of illegal images investigated this year already surpassing the total for all of 2025. Analysts at the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) discovered that photorealistic abuse imagery identified in the first half of 2026 exceeded the volume found throughout the entire previous year.
Based in the UK, the IWF monitors such material globally and stated it had assessed 6,310 AI images that meet the legal definition of child sexual abuse. This figure represents a 40% increase over the more than 4,500 images assessed in the previous year.
I saw a similar report last month. The sheer volume is beyond comprehension. We need stricter international cooperation on this.
40% increase is staggering. Are tech companies actually doing enough to prevent this, or is it just more of the same broken promises?
It’s terrifying that photorealistic AI abuse imagery is now being created at such scale. The legal definitions need to catch up fast.
This statistic is absolutely horrifying. How are law enforcement agencies even keeping up with this technology?
