National Trust for Jersey moves to expand urban ‘green lung’

Conservationists in Jersey are working to protect a vital natural area in one of the island’s most densely populated regions. The National Trust for Jersey has secured the rights to purchase a field adjacent to Maupertuis Farm in St Clement, with the goal of completing the acquisition in the near future.

Organizers describe the initiative as an effort to extend a “green lung”—a patch of vegetation within an urban setting that supports wildlife and helps mitigate pollution. The trust emphasized that the purchase will safeguard the agricultural legacy of Maupertuis Farm and the surrounding landscape.

Alan Le Maistre, the trust’s chief executive, highlighted the growing value of open spaces on the island. He noted that protecting such areas is especially critical in developed zones, calling it a privilege to expand these habitats for both local residents and wildlife.

This effort follows a successful fundraising campaign in 2021, when the trust raised £50,000 in just 37 days to buy a nearby plot on Samares Lane. The organization, which recently marked its 90th anniversary, currently manages approximately 1,800 vergées of land across Jersey. Those interested in supporting the new acquisition are encouraged to contact the charity directly.

  1. Maupertuis Farm has been there forever. Good to see the agricultural side being protected alongside the wildlife.
