A Russian aerial attack struck one of Kyiv’s bridges on Tuesday, targeting the infrastructure despite the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Ukrainian capital. The chancellor’s visit to Kyiv was arranged on short notice but was designed to demonstrate Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine.
France 24 correspondent Gulliver Cragg reported from the scene that while the bridge sustained significant damage, traffic has since returned, albeit at a reduced pace. Video footage released shows a large hole in the roadway surface.
Structural experts have noted that bridges in the region are typically constructed to be highly resilient, making them difficult to destroy even when targeted by ballistic missiles.
Does this show Germany’s support is actually felt on the ground, or is it just symbolic photo-ops while missiles fly overhead? Questions remain.
I find it hard to believe these bridges are as resilient as experts claim. Seeing that massive hole in the road tells a different story.
How incredibly bold and disturbing that the strike happened right during a high-profile diplomatic visit. Timing is everything in war.
