Past Scam Victims Targeted in Recurring Phishing Attacks

Fraudsters are increasingly reusing personal information stolen from fraudulent Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) websites to launch sustained phishing campaigns against their victims. According to reports, once individuals submit sensitive data such as passport and bank details on these counterfeit government portals, they may continue to receive harassing texts and phone calls for several months.

The Guardian highlighted the case of British actress Lisa Riley, who experienced the scheme firsthand while preparing for a trip to the United States last year. Seeking to avoid visa requirements, Riley conducted a standard Google search and located an ESTA application website. She proceeded to input her passport, banking, and personal information, expecting the typical approval process that usually concludes in under an hour.

When the confirmation failed to materialize, Riley contacted the support email address provided on the fraudulent site. Instead of receiving a standard response, she was sent a message containing a link to a site displaying a chaotic assortment of letters and words, indicating a sophisticated attempt to further compromise her data or device.
