Flash Floods in Southeastern Spain Claim Life of 102-Year-Old Woman

Spanish authorities have rescued roughly 90 people after severe flooding struck the town of Madrigueras in the southeastern Castilla-La Mancha region. The deluge, triggered by persistent torrential rain on Friday, resulted in the death of a 102-year-old woman.

Madrigueras, located near Albacete with a population of approximately 4,000, recorded about 140 liters of rainfall per square meter. Local reports indicate the elderly woman was found deceased inside her home after floodwaters reached a depth of one meter (3.2 feet).

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez addressed the crisis via social media platform X, stating that the government is closely monitoring the situation. He also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased woman.

The intense rainfall caused significant damage to vehicles and infrastructure in the area. According to Spanish meteorological authorities, heavy rain is forecast to continue across eastern Spain through Sunday.

This event follows a summer that saw Spain experience its hottest season on record, alongside deadly wildfires in various regions due to prolonged hot and dry conditions.
