Record Diesel Costs Weigh Heavily on Midwest Farmers Amid Iran War Fuel Spike

Escalating fuel costs are placing significant financial pressure on crop growers, trucking companies, and various other sectors as the conflict in Iran drives diesel prices to historic highs.

Joe Hamilton, who manages a 2,500-acre operation growing corn and soybeans in Delaware County, Indiana, faces one of the steepest impacts. With the soybean harvest beginning next week, Hamilton anticipates operating four tractors, two combine harvesters, and five semi-trucks.

This intensive machinery use is expected to result in a record fuel expenditure of approximately 9,000 gallons of diesel for his farming operation.

  1. As a driver, I see these costs daily. It feels like everyone from the field to the road is getting squeezed simultaneously.

  2. Is this purely geopolitical or is domestic refining capacity also a major factor? The article seems to blame everything on Iran entirely.

  3. My dad has a similar acreage near Lafayette. Hope he has good storage contracts locked in before harvest starts.

  4. Does anyone have data on how many small farms will actually survive this season? The consolidation narrative only gets stronger.

  5. This is terrifying for families like Joe’s. When diesel hits these levels, margins vanish overnight and there is no safety net.
