Taraneh Rahimi was informed by prison guards that her sister, Romina, would be raped if she refused to sign a confession. The twins, aged 19 and still in high school, were taken from their homes during the night by masked men, who were later identified as members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. They were detained for their participation in the widespread January protests against the Iranian regime.
For four months, their mother, Marzieh Nourmohammadi, searched frantically for information across hospitals and state institutions. She only recently learned the outcome of their case. During a prison visit in May, Nourmohammadi found her daughters unrecognizable due to the severity of their mistreatment.
I’m shocked but not entirely surprised given the regime’s history. How can the international community do nothing while minors suffer like this?
