New York Governor Condemns Handling of Cornell Rape Investigation

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has publicly criticized the handling of a sexual assault case involving students at Cornell University, stating that the accuser was “failed” by officials responsible for her protection. During a press conference on Friday, Hochul announced that Attorney General Letitia James has been appointed as a special prosecutor to take over the investigation.

The appointment follows Hochul’s loss of confidence in Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten’s ability to properly address the allegations. The case centers on an alleged 2024 gang rape involving six male students. The original investigation was closed without charges in 2024, but the matter resurfaced nationally after the accuser, identified only as Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit in September 2026 against seven fraternity members and the university.

Hochul expressed outrage at the initial investigative process, questioning how the district attorney proceeded without interviewing the accuser or requesting full transcripts. “In what world does the district attorney not even interview her, or anyone else involved, or even request the full transcript?” Hochul asked. She noted that while the woman reported exactly what happened to police, including her belief that she had been raped, those details were omitted from the report Cornell police forwarded to prosecutors.

Attorney General Letitia James acknowledged the public’s desire for answers but emphasized that a thorough probe would require time. “I know that you want answers. I do too. A comprehensive investigation of this nature takes time, but my office is committed to seeing it through,” James said, confirming that evidence gathering and interviews would commence.

District Attorney Van Houten stated that the original complaint did not include allegations that the woman was drugged or forced into sex without consent. However, he reopened the inquiry after the civil lawsuit brought broader attention to the incident.

Cornell University defended its actions, stating it launched its own comprehensive review and suspended the Chi Phi fraternity involved in the allegations. The university also announced a range of disciplinary measures and expressed support for James’ appointment, pledging commitment to an independent external review of all aspects of its handling of the case.

  1. The governor’s outrage is justified, but honestly, when will we stop hearing ‘failed’ and start seeing accountability? Actions speak louder.

  2. Letitia James taking this on is a good sign, but I remain skeptical. Will her office actually have the resources to uncover the truth?

  3. How does a district attorney fail to request full transcripts? I need to understand how this legal oversight happened at all.

  4. It is absolutely shocking that the initial investigation was closed without even interviewing the victim. This level of negligence is unacceptable.
