Following Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event, where the debut of the company’s first foldable iPhone Duo dominated headlines, Executive Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. According to Apple, the larger Pro Max model boasts “the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone.”
Aside from physical dimensions and power capacity, the two devices are remarkably similar. The primary distinction lies in the display: the iPhone 18 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR panel, while the standard iPhone 18 Pro is equipped with a more compact 6.3-inch screen.
Both smartphones are driven by the new A20 Pro chip, which Apple describes as its “most powerful and efficient iPhone chip” to date. This processor is designed to enhance performance for gaming and complex AI tasks. Additionally, both models share identical camera systems, including 48MP sensors, optical zoom, and variable apertures for improved low-light photography.
In terms of design, both phones are available in four finishes: Silver, Black, Glacier, and a new Burgundy option. This marks a shift from the previous generation’s Cosmic Orange hue.
Battery performance is where the divergence is most notable. Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro can deliver up to 36 hours of video playback, an upgrade from the 33 hours offered by the 17 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max extends this further to 45 hours of video playback, a six-hour improvement over its predecessor. This allows for extended usage of services like Apple TV+ or YouTube without needing a recharge.
Charging capabilities also vary slightly. The iPhone 18 Pro reaches 50 percent battery in just 15 minutes using a 60W USB-C cable, though results may vary with less powerful chargers. Wireless charging via certified MagSafe devices achieves the same 50 percent level in 30 minutes. For the Pro Max, five minutes of wired charging provides an additional seven hours of playback.
Priced at a $100 premium over the standard Pro model, the iPhone 18 Pro Max also surpasses the battery life of the newly announced iPhone Duo, which maxes out at 44 hours of playback on its outer screen. Regardless of which model consumers choose, both represent significant improvements in endurance over their previous generations.
I still can’t believe they dropped the Cosmic Orange color. That was my favorite shade from last year. Really missed it.
Another $100 bump for the larger screen and battery? Apple really thinks we have deep pockets this year, doesn’t it?
Wait, didn’t they just launch the foldable Duo today? I’m completely confused about which phone I should actually buy.
Thirty-six hours is impressive, but 45 hours on the Max is a game-changer for travelers. Worth the extra hundred dollars.
