Apple Developing Smart Home Camera That Captures No Video Footage

According to recent reports, Apple is developing a new smart home security camera that deliberately omits video recording capabilities. The device is designed to leverage artificial intelligence to monitor household activity without capturing moving images, addressing growing consumer concerns regarding data privacy and over-surveillance.

Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple insider, disclosed the details in the debut episode of his “Power On” podcast. He indicated that the camera will serve as a companion to Apple’s internally designated J490 smart home display, which remains officially unannounced. Described as cylindrical and comparable in size to a chapstick container, the sensor will operate at a very low frame rate and will not offer standard video features.

Instead of footage, the camera will provide text-based notifications. If the device detects a person entering a room, it can utilize facial recognition to alert the user whether the individual is recognized. Gurman noted that while the absence of video evidence may limit the device’s usefulness to law enforcement during break-ins, the enhanced privacy protections could distinguish it in a saturated market.

This project aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to integrate Siri AI across its smart home ecosystem, potentially alongside upcoming updates to the HomePod mini and Apple TV. Gurman also mentioned that the camera’s technology mirrors what is expected in forthcoming AirPods equipped with tiny embedded cameras. Based on code found in an early build of macOS Tahoe 26.7, those earbuds will capture extremely low-resolution RGB still images for Visual Intelligence analysis, but will not be capable of taking photos or recording video due to privacy considerations following public backlash against similar wearable tech from competitors.

  1. I totally get why someone would want this. Less footage means way less anxiety about privacy breaches.
