U.S. Deploys Third Carrier Group to Middle East as Trump Signals Renewed Iran Strikes

The United States is deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, accompanied by an amphibious force carrying 2,000 Marines, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This move follows signals from President Donald Trump that he intends to resume military strikes against Iran once the November midterm elections conclude.

According to a U.S. official speaking to Al Jazeera, the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group and the Makin Island amphibious ready group have already departed from San Diego. The Wall Street Journal reported that the full military buildup is projected to be completed by November, aligning with Trump’s stated timeline for resuming bombing campaigns against Iranian targets.

The deployment arrives as the eight-month war remains in a stalemate. Indirect diplomatic talks have stalled after Washington rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. The continued blockage has kept global oil prices above pre-war levels.

Tensions in the region also intensified on Thursday when the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen accused Iran-backed Houthi forces of launching a drone attack on the Taibah power distribution station in Medina, which supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki stated that while one transformer was knocked out of service, the broader power grid remained intact.

A Houthi military official dismissed the coalition’s claim as a “lie” designed to distract from Saudi Arabia’s failure to substantiate earlier accusations that the Houthis had targeted the holy city of Mecca.

In parallel moves, the U.S. Treasury expanded sanctions on Thursday to target Iran’s automotive and railway sectors. The penalties cover state-owned rail firms and suppliers located in the UAE, Hong Kong, Turkey, and Indonesia. Additionally, the Treasury sanctioned the A7 network, identified as a Russia-linked financial channel utilized by Iran to circumvent existing sanctions.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent alleged on X that Iran loaded “ZERO crude oil” onto tankers during September, underscoring the effectiveness of the blockade. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unknown projectile on Thursday, sparking a fire but leaving the crew unharmed.

Diplomatic friction further highlighted the deadlock, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly ordered Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s delegation to depart New York ahead of schedule. The decision followed the collapse of Qatar-mediated indirect talks, serving as a stark indicator of the deep mistrust between the two nations.

3 responses to “U.S. Deploys Third Carrier Group to Middle East as Trump Signals Renewed Iran Strikes”

  1. Wait, did the US really send a third carrier group? That seems excessive for a stalemate. What’s the actual endgame here?

  2. Oil prices are already high. Adding more troops will only drive them higher, hurting everyday Americans at the pump.

  3. This escalation feels like brinkmanship. Using military force as an election strategy is terrifying and unpredictable.
