Republic of Ireland manager praises Troy Parrott’s ‘magical’ solo strike in Austria draw

Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has lauded Troy Parrott’s individual brilliance after the striker produced a sublime solo effort in the team’s 2-2 draw against Austria at the Aviva Stadium.

Parrott opened the scoring with a moment of magic, receiving the ball from Adam Idah approximately 20 yards out. After momentarily pausing and checking for support, he chose to take on the Austrian defense alone. He nutmegged Phillip Lienhart, sidestepped David Affengruber, and delicately chipped the ball over goalkeeper Florian Wiegele.

Teammate Jack Moylan was left in awe, standing with his hands on his head and grinning as he watched the goal unfold. Hallgrimsson described the strike as one of the finest ever seen at the Aviva Stadium, predicting it would be replayed for years to come.

Although Parrott’s last-minute winner against Hungary in a previous campaign may be more iconic, this performance highlighted his continued development since his summer move to Real Betis. He later doubled Ireland’s lead with a composed penalty just before halftime, bringing his international tally to 14 goals in 40 appearances, nine of which have come in his last six competitive matches.

Austria responded strongly after the break, scoring shortly before Parrott was substituted in the 75th minute and then finding an equalizer soon after to secure a point.

Discussing the substitution, Hallgrimsson emphasized the need to manage Parrott’s workload ahead of Sunday’s rematch against Israel in Serbia. The manager noted that while Parrott was tireless defensively, preserving him for the upcoming fixture was a priority.

“Absolutely not,” Hallgrimsson said when asked if he regretted taking Parrott off. “We need him in three days.”

The draw keeps Ireland’s ambitions alive, as a victory in Serbia would move them to seven points and strengthen their case for second place in the group, potentially securing a favorable position in the Euro 2028 qualifying draw.

  1. A draw in Austria? Honestly, I’ll take it. Two points from a tough away game suits Ireland perfectly.
