Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth addressed hundreds of junior officers and enlisted leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia on Wednesday, declaring that the Trump administration has successfully engineered a cultural transformation within the U.S. military.
“No fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals,” Hegseth told the assembly. “Just warriors.” He added that “ideological clowns are out” and replaced by what he described as “patriotic cowboys,” noting that testosterone testing is now a priority.
The gathering, which Hegseth announced would become an annual event, echoed a similarly charged speech delivered to senior military leadership last October. During that address, roughly 800 generals, admirals, and senior enlisted leaders were summoned to Quantico on short notice. This year, Hegseth again focused heavily on culture war themes, explicitly blaming former generals and previous defense secretaries by name for what he characterized as the weakening of the armed forces.
Hegseth, who has promised to reduce the number of flag officers, stated that his department has already achieved a 10% cut in the corps and is targeting a 20% reduction. However, his method of intervening directly in promotion boards has drawn sharp bipartisan criticism. Numerous high-ranking officers, including several Black and female servicemembers with strong service records, have been dismissed without explanation.
Sen. Jack Reed, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued a statement condemning the secretary’s approach. “Throughout his tenure, Secretary Hegseth has taken countless reckless, partisan actions that have damaged our military,” Reed said. “He has ended the careers of dozens of our most accomplished senior officers and refused to explain why. Today’s news should alarm every American.”
In his speech, Hegseth defended his record, claiming that retention and recruitment numbers have risen, particularly among women and minorities. He described the current force as “color-blind” and merit-based. He also faced renewed scrutiny over his treatment of the press, criticizing media reports regarding troop morale and depleted munition stocks related to the ongoing war with Iran, now in its seventh month.
“A free press is, of course, important, but partisan activism that intentionally smears the troops and the historic mission that they’re undertaking is fundamentally anti-American,” Hegseth said. “It’s sick. It’s a national betrayal. It’s treason, actually.”
The Pentagon has not held a standard news briefing since May, despite the ongoing conflict. The current press corps was handpicked by the administration and is viewed as more sympathetic to Trump’s policies.
Beyond personnel changes, Hegseth outlined several new initiatives focusing on autonomous weapons, technological innovation, base construction, and the domestic production of essential military supplies. He also pledged to elevate the role of military chaplains, calling religious faith the most essential component of the republic. Additionally, he announced this week that civilian tenure positions at U.S. military academies would be eliminated.
