In a nation where politics is often a family affair, Jair Bolsonaro has evolved from a longtime member of the Chamber of Deputies into the central figure of a political movement built entirely around his nuclear family. His four sons have each launched careers in politics, solidifying the family’s grip on Brazil’s right wing.
The October general election sees Carlos Bolsonaro, the second-oldest son, campaigning for a Senate seat, while the youngest, Jair Renan, is running for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. Meanwhile, the family’s former first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, commands significant sway among conservative evangelical Christians. Although rumors swirled in 2026 that she might run for president, Jair Bolsonaro, while incarcerated, endorsed his son Flavio in December, retaining considerable influence over the Liberal Party, a major right-wing force.
The family’s cohesion, however, is strained by legal and ethical controversies. Eduardo Bolsonaro relocated to the United States in 2025 to lobby President Donald Trump regarding his father’s ongoing trial. This move resulted in the loss of his congressional seat in December due to chronic absences, and a Brazilian court subsequently ruled in June that his actions constituted illegal foreign interference.
Observers note the complexity of the family dynamic. Fabio Zanini, a columnist for Folha de Sao Paulo, characterized the group as a “dysfunctional family” rife with infighting. Nevertheless, he described their collective footprint as a “franchise” that projects influence across various sectors of Brazilian governance.
Flavio Bolsonaro has actively sought to emulate his father’s political style. In early September, with less than a month until the first round of voting, he held a rally in Juiz de Fora, an industrial city in the southeast. The venue held deep significance, as it was there that Jair Bolsonaro survived a near-fatal stabbing during his victorious 2018 presidential campaign. Flavio framed the visit as a way to retrace his father’s steps and stated he was returning to “complete the journey” that Jair had been forced to abandon.
Calling it a franchise is brilliant. They are essentially running Brazil’s right wing like a business brand rather than a political movement.
I had no idea Eduardo lost his seat due to absences while lobbying in the US. That seems like a huge strategic blunder.
