Actress Alexandra Artrip, known for her role as Antonia Owens in the 1998 film “Practical Magic,” has addressed the controversy surrounding the recasting of original actors for the upcoming sequel. Artrip, who played the youngest Owens daughter alongside Evan Rachel Wood’s character, spoke out after Wood expressed disappointment that the production team did not reach out to her regarding the new project.
While acknowledging the sentiment behind fans’ support for the original cast, Artrip posted a video on Instagram urging people to avoid negativity. She praised replacements Joey King and Maisie Williams as “lovely actresses” and stated she believes the production team made the decisions they felt were necessary for the film’s success.
“I just think we should support the film, give it a shot, go in with an open mind,” Artrip said. “Nothing can take away from what the original film was, and I’m excited that we’re able to build on that world with a new novel, new content in 2026.”
Director Susanne Bier also weighed in during the premiere, telling Variety that the recasting was “not personal.” She explained that because the characters are depicted as recent college graduates, the production needed younger actors to fit the narrative. “Practical Magic 2” is scheduled for theatrical release on September 10.
I just hope the story stands on its own. The original is a classic, but change isn’t always bad.
Really? Maisie Williams in a rom-com? I’ll watch it, but I have serious reservations about the casting choice.
