Estonian officials have identified the Russian Federation as responsible for an arson attack at an Estonian defense contractor that provides unmanned military vehicles to Ukraine. The incident occurred at Milrem Robotics in Tallinn on the night of August 14-15.
Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that the attack was ordered by Russian special services, though he did not provide further specifics. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna confirmed that the Internal Security Service (Kapo) concluded with certainty that the fire was an act of sabotage directed by Moscow.
Margo Palloson, head of the security service, told broadcaster ERR that while Russian operatives were continuously seeking opportunities and individuals to carry out such attacks, this incident represented their first successful operation in Estonia this year. He noted that the perpetrators had been apprehended; three suspects, identified as Latvians residing in Russia who had participated in prior attacks, were arrested in Latvia and extradited to Estonia earlier this month.
The accusation aligns with a pattern of alleged sabotage across NATO countries supporting Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. In August alone, Russia faced accusations or suspicion regarding multiple incidents: an explosive-laden drone found near Ukrainian cargo planes at Leipzig airport in Germany, a major warehouse fire at a Bulgarian defense firm, a large explosion at an Italian munitions factory outside Rome, an attempted arson on a Ukrainian-owned drone manufacturer in Slovakia, and two suspicious fires in Poland.
International allies moved quickly to support Estonia. French President Emmanuel Macron described the series of hostile acts as a dangerous escalation by Russia. He referenced the Leipzig incident and emphasized that Russia would not break the unity of Western nations.
“Russia needs to know that it will not overcome our unity or our determination to continue supporting Ukraine,” Macron said. An EU spokesperson echoed this sentiment, affirming that the 27-member bloc would not halt its aid to Kyiv.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged member governments to remain calm. “Russia continues its reckless campaign of hostile actions against Nato allies… But Russia is failing. It is failing on the battlefield in Ukraine and it is failing to undermine our unity and support for Ukraine,” Rutte said.
Kapo warned that individuals recruited for these operations may be misled or given fabricated justifications to conceal state involvement. “Individuals recruited for such operations may be misled or manipulated and may be given false or fabricated justifications for their actions in an effort to conceal the involvement of the Russian state,” Palloson said.
Moscow consistently denies involvement in such activities, often accusing NATO of attempting to destabilize Russia. On Monday, Russia reiterated threats to use nuclear weapons if NATO countries attempted to isolate the Kaliningrad region. Located between Poland and Lithuania, Kaliningrad hosts the Russian Baltic Fleet and is one of Russia’s few ice-free European ports.
NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart condemned the nuclear rhetoric, stating, “Nato is a defensive Alliance and none of our activities or exercises pose a risk to any part of Russia. We strongly denounce the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.”
