A newly released report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has identified significant deficiencies in the tracking of child labor incidents across the United States. The findings indicate that comprehensive information is absent for more than half of workplace fatalities involving individuals under the age of 18.
According to the data analyzed for the period between 2013 and 2023, an average of 24 minors died annually due to work-related causes. In total, 260 child fatalities were recorded over the decade-long span.
However, the GAO noted that critical details regarding the specific cause of death and the industry in which the children were employed were missing from over 50 percent of these cases. These gaps hinder the ability to fully understand the scope and nature of dangers facing young workers.
