Aston Villa secured their first Premier League point of the season in a scoreless draw against Hull City, though they were left to regret a series of wasteful moments. The result sees Villa climb out of the bottom three, while newly promoted Hull remain unbeaten after two matches.
Unai Emery, marking his 200th game in charge of the club, had aimed to build on his side’s improved display against Arsenal by securing all three points. Villa started brightly, with Nicolas Jackson heading wide in the opening minutes before teenager George Hemmings registered the team’s first shot on target of the campaign.
Despite those early signs of promise, the reigning Europa League champions struggled to break down Hull’s defense in the first half. The Tigers created the clearer opportunities, with long-range efforts troubling Villa’s backline.
Villa finally turned the screw after the break, only to squander two clear-cut chances. A clever combination between Emi Buendia and Jackson freed John McGinn for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, but the Scottish midfielder fired his effort over the bar. Three minutes later, Buendia missed the target from close range after being left unmarked inside the penalty area.
Hull then became the more threatening side as the match progressed. Mohamed Belloumi saw a brilliant curling shot strike the crossbar around the hour mark, and Ryan Giles later set up Oli McBurnie in the box. However, the striker, who had been a hero for Hull in the Championship, fluffed his lines to deny the visitors what would have been a dramatic winner.
The stalemate ensures Hull City’s unbeaten start continues, a remarkable feat given their promotion status, while Villa will view the single point as a missed opportunity to get their season fully underway.
Incredible start for us! Staying unbeaten against Europa League champs shows real grit. The boys are flying!
Missed a golden chance to win here. Emery’s milestone should have meant more than a point.
