Manchester City climbed to the summit of the Premier League table after a hard-fought victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium, driven by Erling Haaland’s first-half header.
While City maintained their perfect start to the season, the performance was far from comfortable. Enzo Maresca’s side relied on crucial late saves from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to prevent Coventry from securing their first top-flight point in 25 years.
Haaland’s header midway through the first half proved to be the decisive moment, marking his third goal of the season. The match also marked a significant shift in City’s recruitment strategy, as Maresca integrated summer signings Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye into the starting lineup following the club’s record-breaking £460 million transfer expenditure.
Fernandez was originally slated for the bench after his £125 million move from Chelsea, but an injury to Nico O’Reilly during warm-ups forced him into the starting XI. He partnered with Ndiaye, Haaland, and Antoine Semenyo in an attacking quartet that also featured Rayan Cherki.
Coventry, under Frank Lampard, entered the match seeking to break a duck that had persisted through three consecutive defeats in their return to thePremier League. They came agonizingly close to taking the lead early on when Donnarumma miscontrolled a backpass, though the goalkeeper managed to clear off his line just inches before the ball crossed it.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni also missed significant opportunities before City began to impose themselves. Cherki struck the post, and Fernandez eventually set up the opening goal with a precise pass to Semenyo, whose cross found Haaland for the header.
Although Haaland missed a second chance before halftime, City held onto their advantage only after Donnarumma produced two critical stops to deny Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms in the dying moments.
The result moves City ahead of champions Arsenal, who face Chelsea on Sunday. However, Maresca acknowledged the need for improvement as the team prepares to face local rivals Manchester United next weekend, while Lampard will take heart from Coventry’s ability to compete against the league leaders.
Haaland is a machine. That header was pure class, even if City were dreadful for parts.
