The skulls and bones of at least 28 individuals have been discovered in suspected criminal hideouts within the forests of southeastern Nigeria, police officials reported. The remains were recovered by tactical operatives from the Abia State Police Command on Saturday following a security sweep in the Umunneochi area, specifically targeting the Umuaku and Nneato forests.
Maureen Chinaka, a police spokeswoman, confirmed that the suspects abandoned the sites when officers arrived, leading to the dismantling of the camps. Authorities suspect the remains belong to victims of kidnapping, a prevalent issue in the region where criminal groups frequently abduct motorists and residents for ransom. Forensic teams are currently investigating to determine the identities of the victims and the specific circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Wilfred Afolabi, the Abia State Police Commissioner, described the operation as part of a broader campaign to dismantle criminal networks operating within the state. He noted that the raids were initiated based on intelligence reports indicating suspicious activity in the forested areas. Surveillance has since been increased to track down the fleeing suspects, while local authorities have urged residents to report any further suspicious behavior.
The discovery is expected to heighten concerns regarding kidnapping gangs operating in remote parts of southeastern Nigeria. Previous security operations in the Umunneochi district had also uncovered decomposing bodies linked to similar criminal activities.
In a separate incident involving the country’s northern regions, over 80 people, predominantly women, were abducted during mass kidnappings in two states over the weekend. Security reports indicate that nearly 50 farmers were seized by gunmen in Niger State, while approximately 40 women were taken in Zamfara. These abductions for ransom have become a significant revenue stream for bandits and militant groups in northwestern and northwestern Nigeria.
