Iowa authorities are investigating a fatal incident that claimed the lives of a fifth-grade teacher and her student during a school field trip to a nature reserve. The Iowa City Community School District confirmed that Hannah Jorgensen, 24, and 10-year-old student Ahmed Osman died on Tuesday at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a call around noon regarding two individuals in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. The nature reserve is located approximately 8.5 miles north of Iowa City. Investigators later recovered the bodies of both Jorgensen and Osman from the reservoir.
According to officials, Jorgensen’s body was found on Tuesday, while Osman’s was discovered the following day. The specific circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under active investigation.
In a statement released Wednesday, the school district expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district,” the district said. “Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.”
School administrators indicated that counselors would be available to support the Borlaug Elementary School community during this difficult time. The district added, “This is an extraordinarily painful time for the Borlaug community and our entire school district. We will continue to come together, care for one another, and keep Hannah, Ahmed, and their families at the center of our hearts in the difficult days ahead.”
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also offered her condolences through a statement posted on Facebook, saying, “This unimaginable loss touches the entire Borlaug Elementary community and Iowa City School District. Please know that Iowans across our state are standing with you in the difficult days ahead.”
