More than 40,000 students gathered in the streets of Berlin on Friday to voice their opposition to Germany’s proposed mandatory military service plans.
Demonstrators, many of whom were seen shredding conscription survey documents, turned out in large numbers to protest the government’s intention to reintroduce or expand compulsory military training. Forty thousand is a massive turnout. Does this signal a fundamental shift in German political culture?
Historic parallels to the 1980s anti-nuke protests. The youth are clearly mobilized against this policy shift.
