2027 Grammy Album of the Year Predictions: Olivia Rodrigo and Jack Antonoff Lead the Race

The landscape for the 2027 Grammy Award for Album of the Year is being reshaped by significant absences among male pop artists entering the fall of 2026. Industry observers note that very few major male pop acts with substantial mainstream traction remain eligible, with Noah Kahan, Bruno Mars, and Harry Styles standing out as primary qualifiers. BTS and Drake have effectively removed themselves from contention; BTS withdrew in protest of the new Asian pop category, which members viewed as a potential consolation prize for historical snubs, while Drake continues to quietly opt out of submissions.

Drake’s departure leaves Don Toliver as hip-hop’s leading candidate in a year marked by a notable lack of explosive releases for the genre. On the pop side, Paul McCartney also remains a contender with a critically acclaimed album. However, given the Recording Academy’s increasing tendency toward ageism, his chances are considered slimmer than they would have been in previous decades.

Noah Kahan and Bruno Mars appear to be the safest bets for nominations. Harry Styles presents a more uncertain case. Although his previous album, “Harry’s House,” won the award, his recent single “Aperture” has not achieved the cultural saturation of his prior hit “As It Was.” Consequently, audience enthusiasm appears focused more on his global live residencies than on the record itself, making his nomination prospects a nail-biter for fans.

Madonna also faces an uphill battle for “Confessions II.” Despite an initial surge of support upon release, the album failed to generate hit singles and dropped quickly on the charts. However, with her last Album of the Year nomination dating back to 1999, there is a sense among voters that her perceived qualitative comeback may finally warrant recognition.

Musgraves, who won in 2019 for “Golden Hour,” is another strong candidate returning to a country-inflected sound, but the depth of competition this year places her nomination status on the bubble. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande’s fans argue that the Academy has historically favored her against more polarizing releases, raising the possibility of an ironic nomination this cycle.

Several other critically adored artists face significant hurdles. Lily Allen’s confessional work is widely regarded by critics as award-worthy, yet industry dynamics may hinder her first-time nomination. Similarly, Phoebe Bridgers’ “Lost Weekend” enjoys universal critical praise and has grown into a arena-level draw, five years after “Punisher” secured a nomination when she was less of a household name. However, there is concern that her vote could be split among voters who also champion Rosalía’s “Lux,” another 100%-tastemaker-approved release.
