139 Migrants Dead After Boat Capsizes on Route from Djibouti to Yemen

At least 139 migrants have died and 84 others remain unaccounted for after a boat carrying more than 300 passengers capsized in international waters near Djibouti on its way to Yemen. Among the deceased are 15 children, according to reports from Al Jazeera.

The tragedy underscores the persistent and lethal dangers associated with the Eastern Mediterranean migration route. This passage has become increasingly deadly for those attempting to flee conflict and poverty in the Horn of Africa.

Data indicates that the perilous journey claimed the lives or whereabouts of more than 900 individuals in 2025 alone. The recent sinking represents another significant loss of life along this corridor, where overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels frequently struggle against rough seas and inadequate safety measures.
