The standout performer was the Tiangong Ultra, a humanoid developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, which set new marks in four disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100-meter sprint, Tiangong Ultra completed the distance in 8.64 seconds on August 26, significantly beating Usain Bolt&#8217;s record of 9.58 seconds set in 2009. The robot had already demonstrated its speed during qualifying, clocking 9.39 seconds and later improving to 8.86 seconds before the final.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing its dominance, Tiangong Ultra won the 400-meter final in 38.15 seconds, nearly five seconds faster than Wayde van Niekerk\u2019s 2016 Olympic record of 43.03 seconds. In the 1,500-meter event, the robot finished in 2 minutes, 21.6 seconds, shattering Hicham El Guerrouj\u2019s 1998 record of 3 minutes, 26 seconds. Notably, the next two finishers in that race also posted times faster than the human benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>In the high jump category, a robot manufactured by X-Humanoid cleared a standing height of 2.88 meters (9.45 feet). This exceeded Javier Sotomayor\u2019s 1993 record of 2.45 meters, though experts noted the comparison is nuanced because the robot performed a standing jump rather than the running Fosbury flop technique used in standard high jump events.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Walter, Robotics Research Diligence director at RoboStrategy, told Live Science that these achievements illustrate the &#8220;Best Part is No Part&#8221; principle, where mechanical optimization and the removal of unnecessary degrees of freedom\u2014such as shoulders, elbows, and wrists\u2014enhance efficiency. By reducing mass and simplifying the kinematic chain, the robots can accelerate and balance with greater precision.<\/p>\n<p>However, Walter cautioned that these successes do not imply general-purpose humanoids are ready for diverse tasks. He observed that the robots were barely humanoid in structure, unable to stop without crashing or navigate curves effectively. Several competitors were seen crashing into barriers, falling, or even catching fire, underscoring ongoing reliability challenges. Additionally, the Tiangong Ultra team could not compete in the 4&#215;100-meter relay because the robots lacked hands for the baton exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the limitations in pure athleticism, over 40% of the games&#8217; events required autonomous operation for practical tasks like object manipulation and tool use.
