European spaceflight could witness a milestone today as German company Isar Aerospace prepares to launch its Spectrum rocket from the And\u00f8ya Space Center in northern Norway. The attempt aims to make Spectrum the first rocket to successfully reach orbit from European soil.<\/p>\n
The launch window opens at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT; 10 p.m. local Norwegian time) on September 5. Live coverage will begin an hour earlier at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), broadcast via Isar Aerospace and Space.com.<\/p>\n
This mission, designated “Onward and Upward,” marks the second flight for the two-stage, 95-foot-tall (28-meter-tall) vehicle. Its debut in March 2025 ended in failure when the rocket experienced an anomaly and crashed back to Earth less than a minute after liftoff. An investigation revealed that an unintended opening of a vent valve and a loss of attitude control during the initial roll maneuver were the primary causes.<\/p>\n
Following the first failure, Isar Aerospace addressed the technical issues but faced a series of delays. A pressurization valve problem moved the initial target from January to March. Subsequent attempts were thwarted by adverse weather, intruding boats, and a leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel on April 9. Another scrub occurred on June 15 after abnormal behavior was detected in the vehicle’s fluid systems, a problem the company states is now resolved.<\/p>\n
Unlike its maiden flight, which carried no functional payloads, the Spectrum rocket will deploy five cubesats and one non-deployable scientific experiment on this mission. The rocket is designed to carry approximately 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms) of payload to low Earth orbit, with Isar envisioning it as a workhorse for small to medium-sized satellites.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s manufacturing facility near Munich has the capacity to produce more than 30 Spectrum rockets annually, a scale that could significantly benefit the European launch sector. Toni Tolker-Nielsen, director of space transportation at the European Space Agency, highlighted the broader significance of the effort in a March 2026 statement.<\/p>\n
“These are exciting times for European space transportation, as we witness new actors developing and launching new vehicles,” Tolker-Nielsen said.
