A former official responsible for overseeing vetting at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) filed a whistleblower complaint in August 2025, alleging the agency was circumventing established security procedures to accelerate hiring. The complaint, submitted to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Inspector General, warns that these shortcuts have created significant national security vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n
The official, whose identity was redacted but who previously served as unit chief for ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility, stated that the agency was issuing final job offers before any preliminary vetting by the personnel security division occurred. Furthermore, the document alleges that applicants were granted favorable suitability determinations without undergoing fingerprinting, identity verification, or credit checks.<\/p>\n
“The systematic failures… constitute a direct violation of federal law, DHS directives, and national security policies,” the complaint reads. “The deliberate circumvention of personnel vetting and clearance procedures has placed DHS at grave risk of insider threats, infiltration, and reputational harm.”<\/p>\n
The former official also accused political appointees within DHS of receiving national security eligibility without completing required background investigations. The complaint specifically cited Corey Lewandowski, a former senior adviser to DHS, alleging he possessed derogatory findings that should have rendered him ineligible for federal service. A spokesperson for Lewandowski did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lewandowski had served as de facto chief of staff to former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem until her dismissal in March 2026.<\/p>\n
Kevin Owen, the attorney representing the whistleblower, told ABC News that his client faced immediate retaliation after raising these concerns. Owen stated that the official was interrogated, threatened with criminal charges, and placed on leave for over ten months without any formal allegations of misconduct. The official subsequently chose to retire early.<\/p>\n
In response to the allegations, a DHS spokesperson said the agency does not comment on matters regarding personnel who are no longer with the agency, but maintained that the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility diligently applies proper vetting regulations. The spokesperson also noted that ICE training has been extended from 42 days to 72 days.<\/p>\n
Owen acknowledged that DHS has reversed some of the vetting lapses but argued that many improperly vetted agents remain on duty.
