Originally designed to overcome impassable muddy roads and seasonal monsoons that isolated rural communities, these boat-based classrooms have evolved from a local solution into a globally recognized model for preserving essential services in changing environments.<\/p>\n
Recent visits to the Chalan Beel wetlands revealed students reciting Bangla poetry aboard the vessels. For many children, such as 12-year-old Mahiya Khatun, the floating schools offer a convenient and safe alternative to distant government institutions. “This school picks me up from my house in the morning and, after class, drops me off beside my house,” Mahiya said. “Other schools are not too close; it is tough to reach there during the rainy season because of floods and mud.”<\/p>\n
The impact of these schools extends well beyond primary education. Alumni like Rabbi Hossain, who attended from 2005 to 2010, have gone on to pursue engineering at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology. Rabbi credits the school with providing early access to computer education, a rare opportunity in 2005. Another former student, Nahid Hossain, now serves in the Bangladesh Army, describing the floating school as an emotional anchor that enabled his upward mobility.<\/p>\n
Surovi Khatun, currently an undergraduate studying English, credited the boat school with laying the foundation for her language skills. However, she highlighted a persistent gap: while primary education was free and provided with textbooks and supplies, the costs associated with higher secondary education often force families to marry off their daughters prematurely.<\/p>\n
The initiative, run by the nonprofit Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha, was recently honored with the UNESCO Confucius Literacy Prize 2025. Susan Vize, UNESCO\u2019s representative to Bangladesh, noted that organizations like Shidhulai have been instrumental in raising the national literacy rate from just 17.6% in 1971 to approximately 76% in 2026.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, founder Mohammed Rezwan is developing a larger floating community hub capable of housing up to 150 people during floods while offering healthcare and educational services.
