Conservationists have expressed optimism after trail cameras captured two beavers grooming each other on Somerset’s Holnicote Estate, suggesting the pair has successfully bonded after their release earlier in 2026.<\/p>\n
The semi-aquatic rodents were introduced to the 5,000-hectare National Trust property in February as part of a broader initiative to restore rivers, wetlands, and floodplains. Observations of the pair interacting indicate they are likely to establish a territory together.<\/p>\n
Mathieu Burtschell, a National Trust ranger, noted that the bonding is a strong sign the animals have found suitable conditions at Holnicote, including adequate food, space, and habitat. He explained that beavers typically form small family groups centered around an adult pair that mates for life.<\/p>\n
