The worst-named show on television has arrived, and it is an absolute triumph.<\/p>\n
Some of life’s finest offerings come wrapped in dismal packaging. The Beatles carried a name that still provokes eye-rolls. Smeg fridges are an exercise in linguistic agony. The Nintendo Wii sounded like a symptom of childhood illness.<\/p>\n
But these pale beside Colin from Accounts, the new BBC Two comedy launching Monday 7 September at 10pm. The title is so aggressively ordinary that hearing it nearly induced a coma. It carries the energy of a writer slumping over a keyboard, producing the most boring phrase imaginable and hoping nobody notices.<\/p>\n
Within fifteen minutes of watching the pilot, I seriously considered getting a tattoo of those three words.<\/p>\n
The secret to its success lies in fearless writing, crackling chemistry between its leads, and comic timing that would make seasoned sitcom veterans weep with envy. The series is written by Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, who are partners in real life as well as on screen.<\/p>\n
It follows Ashley, a medical student, and Gordon, a brewery owner and testicular cancer survivor, as their relationship unfolds with refreshing lack of sentimentality. Their meet-cute is not subtle: Ashley accidentally flashes Gordon in the street, causing him to crash his car and inadvertently disable a stray dog they then reluctantly take in. That dog is Colin. The show is definitely not about him.<\/p>\n
What makes Colin from Accounts genuinely special is its refusal to succumb to the schmaltz that swamps most modern romantic comedies. The writing is deliciously satirical, the performances hum with energy, and the humor is unapologetically bold. It is everything a sharp, funny show should be.<\/p>\n
