Candidates contesting the Isle of Man’s general election have received correspondence from the local branch of the Mars Society, calling on them to endorse the territory’s accession to the Artemis Accords. This international framework, which promotes transparent and peaceful space exploration, currently counts over 70 nations among its signatories, with the United Kingdom serving as a founding member.<\/p>\n
Originally launched by NASA in 2020, the accords are non-binding and do not require parliamentary ratification, membership fees, or financial contributions. Stuart Mullan, the chapter leader, described the move as a strategic opportunity with minimal risk but significant potential for global visibility.<\/p>\n
“Signing the Artemis Accords costs nothing and commits us to nothing beyond principles we already stand for,” Mullan stated. “Joining the accords would put us on the map internationally and gives a real boost to the case for developing more STEM projects on the island.”<\/p>\n
Mullan clarified that the proposal does not involve rocket launches. Instead, he urged politicians to promote the Isle of Man as a conducive environment for STEM-focused businesses, which could deliver the skilled, well-paid employment the region currently requires. He noted that the space industry demands the same financial, legal, tax, insurance, and regulatory expertise that the island already provides for aviation and shipping sectors.<\/p>\n
The Isle of Man already maintains a presence in the global space sector through its Space Registry, which processes satellite filings for major operators. Prominent companies such as SpaceX, SES, Inmarsat, Avanti, and Telesat have utilized the island’s filing system or operate ground stations there.<\/p>\n
