The findings indicate that both male and female sharks develop rounder heads as they age, rather than males growing pointed snouts upon reaching sexual maturity, as previously believed.<\/p>\n<p>The research represents the first comprehensive investigation into head shape and diet among bonnethead sharks in Biscayne Bay, with comparative data drawn from populations in Tampa Bay to assess whether developmental patterns are consistent across opposite coasts of Florida. Bonnetheads, small relatives of hammerhead sharks, are unique among shark species for exhibiting clear sexual dimorphism in head shape.<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Liu, the study&#8217;s lead author who completed her master&#8217;s degree at the Rosenstiel School, explained that earlier assumptions were incorrect. &#8220;Our findings show that the pointed head shape is not a feature that develops in males when they reach maturity,&#8221; Liu said. &#8220;Younger males and females both had more pointed heads, but the head became rounder as the sharks matured. That change was much greater in females.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To test whether distinct dietary habits or foraging strategies drove these physical differences, scientists analyzed carbon and nitrogen isotope signatures in muscle tissue from 137 sharks. While the data revealed that Biscayne Bay and Tampa Bay populations occupy distinct food webs, males and females within the same bay relied on similar local food sources. Liu noted that the results provided no evidence that diet or foraging behavior influences the development of sex-specific head shapes.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Macdonald, a co-author and director of the Shark Research and Conservation Program at the Rosenstiel School, stated that the study helps narrow down the drivers of this puzzling biological trait. By examining body shape and diet simultaneously, researchers determined that another cause must be responsible for the head shape variations between sexes.<\/p>\n<p>Between May 2022 and May 2023, the team sampled 105 sharks in Biscayne Bay using longlines and 39 in Tampa Bay primarily via gillnets. Each animal was measured, photographed against a grid board, and had a small muscle sample taken before release. ImageJ software was used to precisely analyze head curvature, minimizing handling time while ensuring detailed measurements.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons behind the pointed heads of younger sharks remain unknown. Researchers hypothesize the shape may enhance swimming efficiency for smaller, younger sharks, a benefit that diminishes as females grow larger for reproduction and gestation. Future studies on swimming performance and embryonic development are needed to verify this possibility and determine when head shape differences first emerge.<\/p>\n<p>The study, titled &#8220;A Head of the Curve: Bonnethead Shark (Sphyrna tiburo) Cephalofoil Morphology and Trophic Ecology,&#8221; was published in Integrative Organismal Biology.
