Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller has described her force as brave but critically underfunded, speaking out following a fatal A66 collision that claimed seven lives, including two officers. In her first exclusive interview with the BBC since the tragedy, Fuller stated that the force requires integration into a larger organization with greater resources to effectively combat the high levels of crime in north-east England.<\/p>\n
The crash occurred in the early hours near Middlesbrough when a Volkswagen Passat, carrying five young men, traveled the wrong way down the motorway before colliding with a marked police car. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reported that officers had pursued the vehicle for approximately seven minutes, linking it to earlier alleged criminal activity, but abandoned the pursuit ten seconds before the impact as the car turned onto a dual carriageway.<\/p>\n
Fuller, who covers the Teesside area, recalled being awakened by the duty commander with news of the incident. “No matter how tragic and devastated you feel, we swing into action and we do what we need to do,” she said. She noted that while her officers face crime levels comparable to metropolitan forces, they operate with less than half the staffing numbers.<\/p>\n
