Welsh Health Minister Mabon ap Gwynfor has urged for immediate transparency regarding the pause on transgender gender-affirming surgeries, following revelations from the North Wales Integrated Joint Care Committee (NWJCC) about significant concerns over patient referrals.<\/p>\n
The NWJCC reported that in certain instances, patients failed to meet fundamental surgical requirements, with unsuitable body mass index (BMI) being a recurring factor. Additionally, there were doubts about whether broader health needs had been adequately assessed and whether specific parts of the referral evaluation process were conducted appropriately.<\/p>\n
Consequently, the NWJCC announced it would commission an independent review of the service, stating it is currently collaborating with experienced gender specialists to commence the review as rapidly as possible. Health Minister ap Gwynfor and Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams attended a meeting with the committee to address the situation.<\/p>\n
The pause was triggered by data indicating that referral rates for gender-affirming surgery in Wales during the 2025-26 period were significantly higher than those observed in English gender services. In response, the Welsh government emphasized that ministers received assurances the decision constitutes a pause rather than a permanent halt. They confirmed that each case will be individually reviewed, and patients will proceed to surgery at the earliest opportunity once appropriate clinical assessments are verified.<\/p>\n
