Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has sought to clarify his stance on professional integrity following controversial comments in which he admitted to playing informal games during matches to amuse himself.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Jamie Vardy\u2019s podcast, the 58-year-old revealed that he and fellow officials would sometimes compete to see how long they could go without blowing their whistle. “We used to say, ‘we’ll kick off now. Right, see how long we can go without blowing a whistle,'” Dean recalled, adding that before the introduction of VAR, he had gone 20 to 25 minutes without making a call on several occasions.<\/p>\n
The remarks have drawn significant criticism from within the refereeing community. Former Premier League official Mark Halsey told BBC Sport that such statements place additional pressure on current officials.<\/p>\n
In a statement posted to his Instagram story on Friday, Dean did not retract his claims but provided context for his approach. He emphasized that throughout his 25-year career, he always applied the Laws of the Game to the best of his ability.<\/p>\n
“My approach as a referee was always to allow the game to flow and whenever possible I preferred to apply a high threshold for contact which the players liked,” Dean wrote. He clarified that if he observed a foul challenge requiring action, he would issue the appropriate decision from the correct position.<\/p>\n
Dean stressed that at no point did he intend to question, criticize, or undermine the integrity of refereeing in England, noting his enduring respect for the profession and the responsibilities it entails.<\/p>\n
