LONDON \u2014 Two people have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel at Nepal’s Trishuli 3A construction site, authorities confirmed Friday following weeks of devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-Tibet border.<\/p>\n
The Nepal Army posted videos and images from the rescue operation on Facebook, confirming the successful extraction. Local lawmaker and engineer Shri Ram Neupane, who has been involved in search efforts, identified the survivors as Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan on his own social media post.<\/p>\n
Neupane recounted how rescuers initially heard voices coming from inside the tunnel. “It has been confirmed that more than one person’s voice has been heard from inside,” he wrote. “When the rescue team said, ‘Don’t panic, we are rescuing,’ a response of ‘yes’ was received from inside.”<\/p>\n
The discovery came as officials updated casualty figures from last week’s unprecedented flash flood. The death toll has now reached 1,268, including 1,252 in Nepal and an additional 16 reported by Chinese state media in Tibet. Another 4,762 people remain missing across both sides of the border.<\/p>\n
Nepal’s National Disaster Management Authority reported Thursday that 4,216 people were still unaccounted for, up from 3,916 the previous day. The combined figures reflect ongoing searches in difficult terrain and worsening conditions.<\/p>\n
Relief operations continue with nearly all communication towers restored and almost 12,000 people rescued through international and domestic aid efforts. Officials mobilized approximately 21,500 security personnel to accelerate search and rescue operations, while more than 5,000 injured individuals have received medical treatment.<\/p>\n
Nepali Prime Minister Shah announced earlier this week that the government would shift focus toward rehabilitation as the disaster enters its second week. Rescue teams are working around the clock to locate survivors trapped beneath debris and floodwaters.<\/p>\n
