Speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Italy, El-Erian said he did not see appetite in the U.S. for immediate fiscal consolidation, which would continue to pressure bond yields upward. Global bond yields have surged this week to multi-decade highs, driven by inflation concerns and expectations of further rate hikes.<\/p>\n
While Friday morning trading saw yields stabilize across developed markets, El-Erian warned that the underlying structural issues remained unresolved. Traditional buyers of U.S. Treasurys\u2014including China, Japan, and Gulf countries\u2014are facing domestic constraints or geopolitical recalibrations that reduce their willingness to absorb supply.<\/p>\n
The Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund\u2019s decision to rethink its allocation to U.S. government bonds was cited as a significant signal. \u201cThe size isn\u2019t big, but the signal that traditional holders and buyers are becoming less reliable is a very important one,\u201d El-Erian said.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that the pressure on interest rates stems more from a fundamental mismatch between issuance volumes\u2014from governments, hyperscalers, and corporations\u2014and the shrinking pool of dependable buyers, rather than solely from inflation or Federal Reserve credibility.<\/p>\n
El-Erian identified three G7 nations particularly vulnerable to sovereign debt pressures: the United Kingdom, Japan, and France. The UK, in particular, was described as a \u201chigh-beta country\u201d where small movements in U.S. rates trigger outsized reactions domestically.<\/p>\n
