Authorities report that at least 1,280 people have died while more than 4,700 remain missing following the disaster that sent torrents of rocks, mud and water into valleys below.

Police have urged first-degree relatives—including fathers, mothers, sons and daughters—of missing persons to provide fresh blood samples for DNA profiling at testing facilities in Kathmandu. For foreign nationals who went missing, relatives abroad can undergo the same DNA collection process in their home countries and email results to Nepal Police for comparison purposes.

Hundreds of DNA samples collected from family members are now being processed at the Nepal Police Forensic Science Laboratory and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology. Officials say the testing is critical because many bodies were found in advanced states of decomposition after prolonged submersion in floodwaters, making visual identification impossible.

Forensic experts note that while tattoos and jewellery can sometimes help with identification, mutilated remains often become unrecognizable. DNA profiles can be extracted from blood, soft tissue, bone and teeth, with Kerstin Montelius, a molecular biologist at Sweden’s National Board of Forensic Medicine, confirming that DNA material can still be obtained from bone even when most soft tissue has decomposed.

The identification process follows Interpol’s Disaster Victim Identification framework, which relies on three primary methods: DNA comparison, fingerprints and dental records. When direct DNA samples from missing persons are unavailable—such as from personal items like toothbrushes or hairbrushes—experts compare DNA from crime scenes with profiles collected from relatives.

Specialist teams use computer systems to analyze and reconcile DNA data from human remains and reference samples, declaring positive identification only when there is a 100 percent match between the two sets of information.

International assistance has arrived to help expedite the testing process. India dispatched a 19-member forensic team that is working alongside Nepali counterparts at the Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Laboratory and the National Forensic Science Laboratory. China has also sent a second contingent of DNA identification experts along with emergency relief supplies.

Meanwhile, rescue operations continue as reports emerged Friday morning that two workers trapped in tunnels at hydropower projects along affected rivers had been saved. Families have begun holding symbolic funerals for missing relatives while awaiting official confirmation of identities through DNA testing.

Forensic experts use DNA profiling from relatives to identify decomposed bodies after Nepal floods killed 1,280 people and left thousands missing.

[1
525,787,958,959,33,957,10
post-379","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-dna-identification","tag-forensic-science","tag-glacial-collapse","tag-interpol-dvi","tag-middle-east","tag-nepal-floods","tag-world
["GET
