More than 200 employees at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, have voted 158-14 to join the Communication Workers of America (CWA) labor union. The United States National Labor Relations Board officially counted the ballots on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Three Wikimedia staff members told WIRED that the unionization provides a mechanism to challenge management as the organization navigates growing competition from AI chatbots and a decline in volunteer editors. The San Francisco-based foundation, established 25 years ago, employs approximately 700 people across 39 countries, with the majority working remotely. The unionized contingent includes staff in software engineering, finance, and communications.<\/p>\n
Lauren de Lench, a lead technical program manager since 2021, stated she voted to unionize after observing colleagues hesitate to speak up in internal meetings due to fears of retaliation. “I want us to be loud and debate freely up and down the organizational chart because that\u2019s how we move quickly, address challenges, and come up with the best collective solutions,” de Lench said.<\/p>\n
Wikimedia employees indicated that concerns regarding pay and benefits were not the primary drivers of the union drive. Instead, frustration over the organization’s handling of recent hiring and firing decisions provided the momentum needed to win the vote. These issues included the disbanding of a team responsible for developing tools for volunteer editors, such as the Commons image library, and the removal of France from the list of approved hiring locations for product and technology roles.<\/p>\n
In a display of solidarity, some volunteer Wikipedia editors organized a campaign this month to improve entries related to labor unions. De Lench expressed a desire to bridge the current gap in trust between staff and leadership. “There are pockets within the foundation where it\u2019s healthy, and I want everyone to have that relationship,” she said.<\/p>\n
Wikimedia Foundation CEO Bernadette Meehan addressed the vote in an organization-wide email, calling unionization the start of a new chapter and expressing optimism.
