The appointment follows widespread reports of friction between Driscoll and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Telle, who currently holds the position of assistant secretary of the army for civil works, was praised by the president in a post on Truth Social. “He is a Great Patriot, who is respected by all,” Trump wrote.

Driscoll provided no formal explanation for his decision to step down from the role of the army’s top civilian official this week. His departure comes after extensive media coverage detailing conflicts with Hegseth, which led to the ousting of several of Driscoll’s allies within the department earlier this year.

According to Legistorm, Telle has been leading the Army Office of Civil Works since August 2025. His career includes two decades primarily spent in Congress, notably serving as chief of staff for Republican Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee from 2021 to 2025. He also held a position for 18 months during Trump’s first term as a special assistant to the president for legislative affairs and spent over a decade working for the late Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi.

Telle assumes leadership of the United States’ largest military branch during a period of ongoing conflict with Iran, with substantial troop deployments in the Middle East. The war has exacerbated shortages of critical defensive assets, including Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) missile interceptor systems operated by the army.

Driscoll, an army veteran who served in Iraq, concluded his 18-month tenure without offering public details regarding his resignation. A friend of Vice President JD Vance, Driscoll had maintained strong relationships with lawmakers across the aisle. However, his allies faced purges under Hegseth, including the removal of Gen Randy George, the service’s top uniformed leader.

Gen Christopher LaNeve, who took over as acting chief of staff, recently terminated a drone modernization initiative that had been championed by Driscoll. Reports indicate Driscoll spoke with Trump about the state of the army prior to submitting his resignation.

In his sole public statement regarding the departure, released Tuesday, Driscoll declined to mention any internal disputes, describing the role as “the honor of a lifetime.” He added, “We could not have made the progress we did without the support of secretary Hegseth.”

The resignation drew criticism from both parties, with some lawmakers pointing fingers at Hegseth. Retiring North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who has had previous disagreements with Trump, stated on social media that Hegseth is “creating a leadership void at the top of our military ranks.”

Donald Trump names Adam Telle as acting army secretary after Daniel Driscoll resigns amid reported tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

[1
210,703,128,10
post-260","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-donald-trump","tag-military","tag-us-politics","tag-world
["GET
