The British Army has been instructed to suspend “non-essential” training exercises as part of cost-cutting measures, according to a defence source. While operational readiness remains the priority, units stationed in the UK that are not preparing for specific deployments have been directed to reduce collective training activities.<\/p>\n
Training for soldiers preparing for or currently on deployment\u2014such as those posted to Estonia, the Falklands, or Cyprus\u2014will continue uninterrupted. However, large-scale live-fire drills and platoon attack rehearsals in domestic ranges like Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire and Sennybridge in Wales are being scaled back.<\/p>\n
Planned activities now cancelled include live-fire drills by the Royal Tank Regiment in Wales, as well as exercises involving tanks and Apache helicopters. A defence source emphasized that these cuts were not the Army’s preferred choice and noted that the pause is expected to last for most of this year.<\/p>\n
Efforts aimed at modernizing the force, particularly in drone and counter-drone warfare, are set to proceed. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) states it is reviewing each training request individually, focusing on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. Despite an overall increase in defence spending, the MoD continues to face challenges funding its investment plans, with much of the new money allocated to capital projects and new weapons systems.<\/p>\n
An Army spokesperson stated, “Our training continues and we are prioritising activity that contributes most directly to readiness, deployability and operational effectiveness,” adding that the service is investing \u00a32bn to transform training over the next 15 years.<\/p>\n
The cuts come as Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces mounting pressure to raise defence spending to 3% of GDP by the end of the decade. The government has committed to reaching 2.5% by next year, with the Defence Investment Plan projecting a rise to 2.7% by 2027\/28. However, details on funding beyond that period remain unclear, with the Treasury indicating that plans for the 3% and 3.5% targets will be outlined in next year’s spending review.<\/p>\n
Tan Singh Dhesi, Labour MP and chairman of the Commons Defence Select Committee, urged Burnham to commit to the 3% target by 2030, warning that investment in the armed forces is imperative. Burnham reiterated his existing commitment to the goal.<\/p>\n
Defence spending was a significant factor in the downfall of Burnham’s predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer, following the resignation of former Defence Secretary John Healey.
