The move, effective in November, comes as the company seeks to balance surging demand with rising operational expenses. Subscribers will have the option to purchase additional hours beyond their allotments.

In a blog post, Xbox stated that the cost of delivering cloud gaming increases with both the number of users and playtime duration. “Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance,” the company said, acknowledging that the change may result in higher costs for some players. This strategy mirrors similar usage-based pricing models adopted across Microsoft’s broader portfolio, including GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

The new tiered limits vary by subscription level. Game Pass Ultimate members, paying $22.99 monthly, will receive 15 hours of cloud access. Game Pass Premium subscribers at $14.99 per month will get 10 hours, while Game Pass Essential users at $9.99 will be allocated five hours. Microsoft noted that only 4% of Game Pass subscribers currently exceed reasonable cloud usage thresholds.

The policy change follows recent efforts by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma to restructure the division for profitability. In July, Xbox began testing ad-supported game streaming as part of broader business model evaluations. Additionally, non-subscribers will be permitted to buy cloud gaming time to stream titles they already own, though Microsoft did not disclose specific pricing for extra hours or standalone cloud access.

Microsoft is ending unlimited cloud gaming for Game Pass subscribers, introducing monthly hour caps starting in November to manage escalating infrastructure costs.

[4
92,400,160,93,374,399
post-149","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-technology","tag-business","tag-cloud-gaming","tag-gaming","tag-markets","tag-microsoft","tag-xbox
["GET
