Data from M\u00e9t\u00e9o France indicates that the average temperature for summer 2026 reached 24 degrees Celsius across day and night cycles. This figure sits 3.6 degrees Celsius above the long-term normal, surpassing the heat recorded in 2003, which was 2.7 degrees Celsius above average.<\/p>\n
The season was also characterized by extreme dryness, ranking as the second driest since records started. Rainfall deficits approached 40%, prompting firefighters to battle blazes across the country, including in regions typically shielded by cooler, wetter climates such as Brittany and northern France. A historic fire near Bordeaux forced the evacuation of approximately 250,000 residents.<\/p>\n
Heatwave conditions were unprecedented, with 53 days of extreme heat spread across three separate episodes. This significantly exceeded the 33 heatwave days recorded in the summer of 2022.<\/p>\n
M\u00e9t\u00e9o France highlighted that ocean temperatures along the coastlines of mainland France and Corsica also reached record highs. Additionally, unusually hot weather persisted outside the traditional summer window, affecting last May and early September, which scientists identify as clear indicators of ongoing climate change.<\/p>\n
The extreme conditions were part of a broader trend across western and southern Europe, where millions in France, Italy, Spain, and the UK faced dangerous temperatures.
