The deal marks Nvidia’s second-largest acquisition on record, trailing only its $20 billion purchase of Groq assets last December.

The acquisition grants Nvidia direct access to Hugging Face’s community of more than 18 million AI developers. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, along with co-founders Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf, will join Nvidia’s leadership team, bringing the talent behind the platform.

Industry observers note parallels to Microsoft’s strategy: by acquiring a leading open-source development and distribution platform, the acquirer gains influence over the ecosystem that drives demand for its core products. For Microsoft, this translates to Azure cloud services; for Nvidia, it means accelerated computing hardware and its CUDA software stack.

While open-source code is freely available, the strategic value lies in developer loyalty. Developers significantly influence technology adoption decisions across major companies. By winning over developers, Nvidia aims to ensure builders within leading enterprises maintain affinity for its ecosystem.

Similar to how Microsoft integrated Azure as a hosting option for GitHub developers, Nvidia can incentivize use of its paid products by reducing friction as projects move from development to deployment.

The deal serves both offensive and defensive purposes. Offensively, it aligns open-source large language model development with Nvidia’s ecosystem. Defensively, it prevents competitors like Amazon and Alphabet from acquiring the platform.

Nvidia has committed to keeping Hugging Face open to all silicon vendors, cloud providers, and model developers, with no requirement for users to run models on Nvidia chips. However, deeper integration of Nvidia technology into the platform will make its offerings a natural next step for developers.

In a blog post announcing the acquisition, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang wrote: “We build our own models, libraries and tools in the open so developers everywhere can use them, modify them and build on top of them.”

When asked on CNBC about supporting both open-source and proprietary AI models, Huang acknowledged that even closed-model labs utilize open-source approaches. He recommended users leverage closed models when possible, noting their rapid advancement and off-the-shelf readiness.

Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora congratulated Huang on the deal, emphasizing the importance of balancing open-source and open-weight models with frontier large language models. “Open-source models provide everything, from the code to training details and the blueprint needed to rebuild from scratch,” Arora explained in a tweet. “Open-weight models allow downloading and tweaking but don’t provide training data details.”

Arora added: “We have use cases where bleeding-edge abilities are needed from frontier LLMs, but as we evolve, my view on different horses for different courses continues to be reaffirmed.”

The acquisition reflects a broader tech pattern where open-source and proprietary models coexist. Linux and Windows, Microsoft Office and Google Workspace have demonstrated that both approaches can advance capabilities while driving demand for underlying infrastructure.

Nvidia ultimately seeks to tap rising compute demand regardless of whether AI models are open-source or proprietary. By supporting development across all AI areas, the company aims to influence where innovation occurs and drive revenue growth over time.

Nvidia’s acquisition of Hugging Face mirrors Microsoft’s GitHub deal, securing access to 18 million AI developers and strengthening its ecosystem dominance.

[1
238,96,92,95,93,374,94,375
post-140","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-acquisition","tag-ai","tag-business","tag-hugging-face","tag-markets","tag-microsoft","tag-nvidia","tag-open-source
["GET
