Josh Adams, who has earned 70 caps and toured with the British and Irish Lions, serves as assistant attack coach at his boyhood club, Hendy.

Similarly, back-rower Aaron Wainwright, despite moving from the Dragons to Leicester Tigers, holds the position of director of rugby at Whiteheads RFC in Newport. Other notable examples include center Joe Hawkins, who supports Ystalyfera, and Harri Deaves, who is heavily involved with Pontyclun. Former Under-20s captain Ryan Woodman dedicates time to Caldicot, while legendary forward Justin Tipuric previously set a precedent through his long-term coaching work at Trebanos.

This commitment is not limited to retired players seeking a post-career role; many are still in the midst of their professional careers, balancing these responsibilities alongside the pressures of elite sport.

Hawkins, a 23-year-old Scarlets player, describes his connection to Ystalyfera as deeply personal. With his grandfather having served as club chairman and president, his grandmother working in the club van, and his mother acting as physiotherapist, the club represents family heritage rather than professional networking.

“Ystalyfera is in my blood,” Hawkins said. “In the professional game, there’s so much pressure at times to perform and everything. It’s nice to come back to community rugby where everyone’s doing it for the love of the game and just enjoying themselves.”

The practice highlights a broader structural difference in Welsh rugby. While global football increasingly separates players from their origins—with only Qatar and Saudi Arabia fielding World Cup squads composed entirely of domestic league players in 2022—Welsh rugby retains pathways that allow athletes to remain grounded.

For Hawkins, these sessions are about preserving the foundation of the sport. “This is where it all starts for everyone and there are people who go on to play professionally. They all start in community rugby somewhere,” he explained.

These efforts serve as a reminder that, despite industry trends pulling stars away from their roots, Welsh rugby continues to value and nurture its community connections.

Top Welsh internationals continue to coach and support their local community clubs, contrasting with the detached nature of modern elite football.

[7
2519,2520,2518,1040,627,972
post-1253","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sports","tag-aaron-wainwright","tag-joe-hawkins","tag-josh-adams","tag-rugby-union","tag-sports","tag-wales
["GET
