The device, dubbed the &#8220;Paraborg,&#8221; represents a significant evolution in bio-robotics, moving beyond simple exploration to active life-saving interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Published in the journal Advanced Science, the study details how scientists integrated electrodes into the nervous systems of large burrowing cockroaches native to northern Queensland. These insects, which can grow up to 87 millimeters long and weigh 40 grams, were selected for their ability to traverse tight spaces within collapsed structures where drones and robots often struggle.<\/p>\n<p>The team engineered two distinct versions of the Paraborg. One model carries a miniature camera to assess the condition of trapped survivors, while the second is equipped with an automated injection mechanism designed to deliver medication remotely.<\/p>\n<p>To control the insects, researchers embedded electrodes into the cockroach\u2019s antennae and cerci\u2014sensory appendages at the rear of the abdomen. By applying electrical stimuli at frequencies between 10 and 40 hertz, operators could steer the insect\u2019s direction by stimulating individual antennae and regulate its walking speed by stimulating both cerci simultaneously. Stimuli exceeding 50 hertz proved ineffective over time.<\/p>\n<p>The injection system utilizes a spring-loaded mechanism that triggers a chemical reaction between citric acid and baking soda. The resulting carbon dioxide buildup generates sufficient pressure to push a syringe plunger, dispensing medication. Although the added equipment increased the cockroach\u2019s height by approximately 15 millimeters and its weight by 17 grams, tests indicated that its natural movement remained largely unimpeded.<\/p>\n<p>During the study, the insects were anesthetized while the microchips and electrodes were attached.
