U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday for their first visit to the Ukrainian capital, continuing diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s full-scale invasion.<\/p>\n
The trip follows a closed-door meeting in Moscow on Saturday that lasted more than three hours between Witkoff, Kushner, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite the extended discussion, no breakthroughs were announced. Yuri Ushakov, Putin\u2019s foreign policy adviser, characterized the talks as constructive and frank, though he did not disclose specific outcomes.<\/p>\n
While Moscow provided a comprehensive assessment of the battlefield situation, Ushakov noted that the discussions extended beyond the war. He stated that economic issues and potentially large-scale joint projects between Russia and the United States were also discussed in detail.<\/p>\n
The push for peace comes as Washington’s focus has shifted toward the Iran conflict over the past six months, causing momentum in Ukraine negotiations to wane. The last known visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow occurred in January, during which they also held talks with Putin at the Kremlin.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, combat operations have intensified along the 1,250-kilometer front line. Although Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to pause strikes on each other’s capitals during the diplomatic meetings, both sides traded fire overnight into Sunday.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that Russian attacks across multiple regions killed one person and injured at least 10 overnight. In Zaporizhzhia, drone strikes killed a 74-year-old man and wounded three others. In the Khmelnytskyi region, a drone strike damaged an apartment building, injuring seven people.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s Air Force stated that it intercepted 82 of the 108 Russian drones launched overnight, along with six missiles. Conversely, Russia claimed its air defenses shot down 258 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions, occupied Crimea, and waters in the Black and Azov seas.
