Simultaneously, geopolitical conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, are disrupting supply chains and driving up costs for fuel and fertilizers.

Recent findings from the Climate-Driven Agricultural Decline Index (CADI), developed by Hannes Mueller and colleagues at the Institute for Economic Analysis and the Barcelona School of Economics, highlight that tropical regions are bearing the brunt of agricultural losses. Countries such as Cambodia, Bangladesh, Burundi, Nigeria, Paraguay, and El Salvador are already experiencing significant declines in harvests compared to three decades ago.

Mueller identified Northern Africa as a region of particular concern, describing the projected impact as “horrible.” He noted that within the next 25 years, nearly half of the global population could reside in areas where farm productivity is decreasing.

The research suggests that conflict risks arise not only from scarcity but also from shifts in productivity. In countries like Sudan, some areas may become more productive while others suffer, creating new winners and losers. This dynamic can spark competition over land and resources, even before changes fully materialize. Mueller explained that expectations of future value can lead to preemptive grabs, causing negotiations to break down.

Even in wealthy regions, these pressures are evident. Major sparkling wine producers in Europe are purchasing land in mountainous areas expected to become viable for grape cultivation in the coming decades, displacing locals and raising land prices.

A key finding from CADI is that agricultural changes are more likely to lead to conflict in non-democracies. Mueller emphasized that democratic institutions, despite being slow, provide platforms for negotiation and help manage competing interests peacefully.

Abdullah Fahimi of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) warned that South Asia and the Sahel are critical regions to monitor due to their vulnerability to climate change and rapid population growth. South Asia, home to approximately 2 billion people, relies heavily on food imports and faces threats from heat waves, floods, and saltwater intrusion.

Fahimi highlighted the Himalayas and Hindu Kush ranges as vital water sources for the region. While melting glaciers currently increase water availability, he cautioned that long-term depletion could trigger a humanitarian crisis affecting billions.

The intersection of food insecurity and instability can also facilitate recruitment by armed groups and erode government legitimacy. Mueller concluded that effective adaptation requires not only technological solutions but also strong institutions capable of managing changes in access to land, water, and jobs.

New research indicates climate change and food insecurity may fuel conflict, with democratic institutions playing a key role in mitigating violence through negotiation.

[2
136,390,288,1762,228,67,10
post-1219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-world","tag-agriculture","tag-climate-change","tag-conflict","tag-food-security","tag-geopolitics","tag-germany","tag-world
["GET
