Volunteers with the Durham City Riverscape Community removed more than 50 bags of rubbish from the River Wear during their most recent cleanup operation. The group, which was established shortly before the coronavirus pandemic to conduct monthly river maintenance, estimates it has extracted tonnes of waste from the waterway since its inception.<\/p>\n
Among the debris removed this year was a large fridge freezer, an extraction that led volunteer Graham Hollingwood to describe it as the team’s most significant challenge to date. Despite the difficulty, the group successfully cleared the appliance, demonstrating their capacity to handle substantial fly-tipping hazards.<\/p>\n
Hollingwood noted that the collective effort is bringing the organization close to the 1,000-bag milestone, a figure he said highlights both the extensive labor required to protect riverbanks and the remarkable commitment of the volunteers. He emphasized that the project’s success relies heavily on the City of Durham Parish Council, citing their funding, practical assistance, and encouragement as essential resources.<\/p>\n
